CHAPTER 30

“You’ve seen her—before?”

Dad couldn’t quite believe his eyes, either. “Yes, when I was a young boy. I always thought it was a dream.”

“Jon? She’s a teenager,” my mom pointed out.

“She’s the one I saw thirty-five years ago. I can’t explain how that’s possible.”

“But we can!”

Mom, Dad, and Katrín turned to us with inquisitive glances. There was nothing to do but just tell them. How bad could it get?

“Her name is Aurora Borealis. She’s as old as the Earth itself.”

Their faces turned into big grins, as if they didn’t believe me at all. Mom chuckled loudly.

“It’s true!” I continued. “She controls the Northern Lights and the planet. And all life on it. We think...” I look over at Nikko, he stood right next to me to show that he supported what I was about to say: “We think she’s Mother Earth.”

Dad’s thoughts were definitely swirling around in his head as he nodded gently, as if what we said could actually be right. Katrín thought while Mom erupted in laughter.

“Mother Earth?” she exclaimed, shaking her head as she continued to laugh. “You’ve been watching too much TV. She’s a human being, just like us.”

“So, it was true!” Dad said aloud, looking over at us.

“Yes, she is real!” I replied.

We were left looking at her. The hill was just too far away to see all the details about her, other than that she was dressed in white and that she had long blond hair.

“So? Should we talk to Mother Earth or not?” asked Katrín.

She played along with our fantasies, just like adults do even if they don’t believe in any of them.

“It’s not a good idea,” I blurted. “She’s a little afraid of strangers. I should go talk to her.”

“No, I’d rather talk to her myself,” Katrín replied.

“No, you can’t,” slipped out of me before I could think of a better comment. I could see that Katrín immediately became more curious.

“Why not?”

I didn’t have an appropriate answer, and my brain was very little help. “Because!”

When that word came out of my mouth, I realized I’d lost.

“What nonsense,” Katrín said, about to push her way past me, as I stood between her and the hill.

“We can all go there!” my mom interfered. “Then we get an answer as to who she is.”

Katrín nodded and led the way.

I hurried past Katrín. I had to get there before her to make sure she would not scare Aurora. Or worse. She might still be in pain.

Katrín stepped past me as if she wanted to be first. Why? Maybe she had an agenda. I couldn’t have any of this because I didn’t know how Katrín would react when she saw Aurora. Imagine if she saw her as a threat and hurt her. I didn’t trust anyone when it came to Aurora.

I took longer steps trying to keep up. Katrín noticed and strode even faster. I was struggling to keep up. It wasn’t easy to run uphill in this heat. Sweat was running down my cheeks, but I kept going.
